summer fun {birmingham, al children photographer}

I was lucky enough to get the chance to borrow this lens for a day last week so I took advantage of it. =) I know I didn't do this awesome lens the justice it deserves but I had fun trying.
I've also got the chance to play with an external flash for a few days. I've been using it with different modes on my camera but I still can't get good results consistently. Any tips??

I'm just trying to figure out the external flash thing, too! You're pics are awesome! You make me want boys!!

Ohhh, your boys are so cute... those first two photos are adorable! And that lens gives some really sweet DOF!! Yummmmmy! :) I am by no means an expert at flash but I've been forcing myself to learn it, and here's what I do. First, leave your flash off, then set your camera to Manual and dial in your aperture and appropriate shutter speed... usually I do around iso 125, f/2.8 and 1/125. Your in-camera meter will scream at you that things aren't right, but just ignore it. :) Then turn on your flash, set the power to like 1/16, take a pic (bouncing the flash off the ceiling or wall) and if it's still too dark, increase the power until you get the right result. If you're at full power (1/1) and it's still too dark, either lower your f/stop or up your iso gradually until you get the right result. You'll get to the point where you'll see a situation and generally know how to do your settings so it's not such a long process, and I still have a long way to go with it. Hope that helps a bit! :)

Oh, and btw..... I really like to keep my flash at around 1/4-1/16th power... and I would suggest a diffuser, too. :)
